March 2018

9th – 11th March: Mayo Stages Rally
A weekend of rally car racing in the spectacular, and challenging, landscape of Achill. See Mayo Motorsport Club website for full details.

11th March: Mother’s Day
Take herself out for a nice beach walk or hillwalk, followed by a meal in one of Achill’s restaurants.

17th March: St. Patrick’s Day
A weekend of festivities (17th falls on a Saturday; Monday 19th is a Bank Holiday) for Ireland’s National Day. Follow Achill’s famous pipe bands on their traditional parades.

18th March: St. Patrick’s Day Parade
Parade at Achill Sound.

24th March: Western Greenway Marathon
Inaugural running event on the Great Western Greenway from Westport to Achill. Three distances (Half, Full Marathon, and Ultra) plus relay option, with the Ultra ending at Achill. Full details & booking.

30th March: Good Friday

April 2018

1st April: Easter Sunday

2nd April: Easter Monday
Bank Holiday.

2nd April: Achill EXPO 18
Local businesses showcase their products and services. Venue: Údarás na Gaelteachta factory, Bunacurry. 12 noon – 4pm.

8th April: Currane Coastal 5K / 10K Race

20th April: Achill Tourism Open Day

May 2018

4th – 7th May: Heinrich Boll Memorial Arts Weekend
Weekend of cultural activities and events.

4th – 6th May: Achill GAA Clubhouse Opening
Festival of events in The Big Red Barn:
Friday 4th: Festival Opening – spectacular display of local talent. Admission free.
Saturday 5th: Stars in their Eyes (tickets €20) followed by After Party with the Jellybean Bank (adm. €10)
Sunday 6th: Official Clubhouse Opening with family fun day, White Collar Boxing followed by music with Dublin City Ramblers.

5th May: Mayo Day

5th – 7th May: Achill Weekender
A weekend of guided walks, archaeology and socialising. In association with Achill Archaeological Field School. More Details.

7th May: May Day Bank Holiday

18th – 19th May: Walking Weekend
Achill GAA Healthy Clubs Walking Weekend.

18th – 20th May: Achill Yoga Studios Yoga & Cycling Weekend.

June 2018

2nd June: Gearóid’s Smile / Three Peaks Challenge
Climb Achill Island’s three highest peaks in one day, in support of an inspirational cause.

July 2018

7th July: Achill Half Marathon & 10K

8th July: Keel Currach Races
Races using traditional west of Ireland wooden rowing boats. Venue: Purteen Harbour.

15th July: Dooagh Day
Annual family fun festival in the village of Dooagh. See Dooagh Day facebook page for details.

19th – 21st July: Irish National Sheepdog Trials

21st – 22nd July: Kite Festival
Following last year’s inaugural Mayo International Kite Festival, Pure Magic is hosting another event – bigger and better – in Keel.

28th July – 4th August: Scoil Acla
Annual Scoil Acla summer school, with tuition in music, writing, drama and art.

29th July: St. Colman’s Féte
Annual community and family fun day at St. Colmans, Keel. All welcome.

August 2018

10th – 12th August: Tarry Fest
Festival celebrating the community of Dookinella.

September 2018

2nd September: Tour de Achill
Cycling event organised by Achill Wheelers cycling club, with choice of 38km, 65km or 110km routes.

9th September: QUEST Achill
Adventure racing (cycling / running / kayaking) with three levels of difficulty.

15th – 23rd September: Talking Walls Festival
A festival of discovery to Achill Island, through buildings, walks, talks, art, drama and much, much more!! See facebook page for full details.

28th – 30th September: Battle For The Lake
Annual kitesurfing competition and music festival.

October 2018

14th October: Achill Sheep Show

12th – 14th October: Achill Dry Stone Wall Festival 2018
Music, food, guided walk and dry stone wall building. More details.

26th – 29th October: Achill International Harp Festival
