January 2024

1st January – New Year’s Day (Public Holiday)
Start the New Year with a bracing dip in the Atlantic at the traditional New Year’s Day Swim at Silver Strand beach, Dugort, 1pm.


February 2024

5th February – Imbolc (Public Holiday)
Public holiday on St. Brigid’s Day, traditionally seen as the beginning of spring.


March 2024

17th March – St. Patrick’s Day
Follow the Achill pipe bands on their traditional St. Patrick’s Day marches in lower Achill.

18th March – St. Patrick’s Day Public Holiday
As the 17th falls on a Sunday, Monday 18th March is a public holiday. Also the date for the ‘day after’ St. Patrick’s Day Parade at Achill Sound, 1pm.

29th March – Good Friday
Start of the Easter long weekend. Good Friday is a bank holiday but not officially a public holiday in Ireland.


April 2024

1st April – Easter Monday (Public Holiday)

1st April – Currane Coastal
5k & 10k Walk, Jog or Run. In aid of Currane Defib Programme. Details & registration from Currane Coastal facebook page.

21st April – Cold Water Dip Challenge
Keem Bay is one of the locations for the national Cold Water Dip fundraiser for Family Carers Ireland. Details & registration.


May 2024

3rd – 5th May – Heinrich Böll Memorial Arts Festival
Annual arts festival weekend with panel discussions, presentations, writers workshop, guided walks, live music and more. More Details.

6th May – May Day Bank Holiday

11th May – Darkness Into Light Sunrise Walk
Sunrise walk in Keel to raise funds for Pieta and awareness of suicide prevention. Details and Registration.

17th – 19th May – Home to Mayo Achill Walks Festival
Four walks with guides offering interpretation of Achill’s spectacular landscape and rich history and folklore. Details and booking links.

18th & 19th May – Irish Surfing Junior Tour
Achill Island Surf Club once again hosts a leg of the Irish Surfing Junior Tour at Keel Beach.

24th – 26th May – Daring Dames Festival

June 2024

3rd June: June Bank Holiday

8th June: Amazing Gearóid’s Three Peaks Challenge
Conquer three of Achill’s major peaks – Croaghaun, Slievemore and Minaun Heights – in one day in aid of a wonderful cause. Details and registration from gearoidssmile@gmail.com.


July 2024

6th July: Achill Half Marathon & 10K
Annual half marathon and 10K running event, starting and ending at Keel Sandybanks. More information. Note – both runs are SOLD OUT.

28th July – 3rd August: Scoil Acla
