Achill Island is at the heart of the Wild Atlantic Way, and Keem Bay is one of the 14 Signature Discovery Points that span the 2500km route. The breathtaking scenery of the west coast of Ireland is unrivalled and Achill epitomises all that is dramatic and wild about the route, with ancient castles, prehistoric sites, towering cliffs, windswept beaches and untamed landscapes.
The sheltered bay at Keem is said to have been blessed by St. Patrick during his stay on Croagh Patrick. According to folklore, St. Patrick looked out from the mountain and saw the golden beach at Keem and said that no-one would ever drown in its waters. Today safety is ensured during summer months by the beach lifeguards.
