The cottage is a ten minute drive from the village of Achill Sound, gateway to the island and its commercial hub, with multiple shops including Supervalu supermarket, galleries, pubs and cafes, two hotels, and services including a pharmacy, hairdressers, beautician, florist, library, church, visitor information office, and mobile bank. There is a newly-built children’s playground overlooking the sea and, just across the bridge, the current start/end of the Great Western Greenway from Achill to Westport via Mulranny and Newport. This Greenway is currently being extended into Achill and will pass within a five minute ride of Derabhla cottage.
There are numerous visitor attractions and activities available within a 20 minute drive from Derabhla cottage, including five Blue Flag beaches, walking trails such as Sli Grainne Mhaol and Valley loop walk, Minaun Heights, Grainne Uaile’s castle, the Atlantic Drive, Achill Cycle Hub, Croaghaun Sea Cliffs, the Deserted Village, and the Maritime History Trail. Local providers offer equipment hire and/or tuition in surfing, kayaking, kite surfing, standup paddleboarding, horseriding and more. There are a number of guided tours available whether on foot, by coach, or boat trips to Croaghaun Cliffs, Inishkea Island or Clare Island. Visitor attractions include the Achill Experience aquarium and visitor centre, Achill Island seaweed baths, crazy golf, nine-hole golf course and the world famous Keem Bay.
