Keem Bay Wins More Accolades

Achill’s Keem Bay, the spectacular horseshoe bay with Blue Flag beach at the western tip of the island, has once again featured in a number of ‘best of’ surveys and lists.

At the end of May, Betfair Casino compiled a list of Ireland’s Top Ten Hidden Beaches that are worth a visit this summer. It featured Keem Bay at number three in its rankings. The list was rated according to an index score based on the number of hashtags and views each coastal gem achieved on two prominent sites – the social media platform Instagram and the travel platform TripAdvisor. The research placed Silver Strand beach in Co. Cork at number one, with two beaches tied in second spot – Dog’s Bay in Co. Galway and Curracloe beach in Co. Wexford. Achill Island’s Keem Bay, which earlier this month retained its Blue Flag status, was ranked at number three (or four, for the numerical pedants).

At the same time, specialist villa company CV Villas released a list of 200 beaches worldwide with the bluest waters. Their research was based on colour theory and took unedited Google Maps screenshots of all the beaches which were then assessed using digital tools to find the truest blue water. The researchers used a colour dropper tool to identify the RGB code for each body of water, and cross-referenced this with the code for YInMn Blue, a hue that was declared the ‘bluest shade’ by Oregon State University in 2016. This scientific approach created a list with Achill’s Keem Bay ranked at number 17 in the world. It was the highest-ranked beach in Ireland and second only to Scotland’s Troon beach (11th place) in the rankings for the British and Irish Isles. Number one on the global list was Pasqyra Beach, also known as ‘Mirror Beach’, in Albania.
