Short Breaks on Achill: Heritage & Storytelling
A suggested itinerary for a two or three day break in Achill with a focus on history, heritage and storytelling.
Day One
- Arrival: Take a tour of Achill’s Atlantic Drive, stopping at Grace O’Malley’s Castle and historic Kildavnet church, cemetery and St. Dymphna’s Holy Well.
- Dinner with a view + check weekly Achill Entertainment Guide for nightly live music and events.
Day Two
- Visit to the Deserted Village at Slievemore. Guided tours 11am daily during the season.
- Visit megalithic tomb and separate megalithic burial site at Slievemore.
- Visit Achill Experience Aquarium & Visitor Centre for history and marine experience.
- Trip to Keem Bay – stopping at the car park in Dooagh for the monument to Don Allum, first solo transatlantic rower (landed in Dooagh in 1987) and calling at Corrymore Lake.
- (Wet weather alternative: visit to Achill Island Sea Salt factory and/or Achill Distillery, both in Bunnacurry)
- Evening meal followed by sunset at Dugort’s beaches or Tonragee Pier
Day Three
- Explore the historic Colony area in Dugort. Guided walking tours on Wednesdays and Sundays during the season.
- Lunch & departure.
