The Great Western Greenway is a 42km long track for cyclists, walkers and runners which follows the route of the former Achill to Westport railway line. The Achill end of the Greenway starts at Achill Sound. In 2011 the Great Western Greenway was awarded the EDEN European Destination of Excellence Award for Sustainable Tourism.
On 4th December 2011, RTÉ’s Tracks and Trails programme featured a journey along the Great Western Greenway from Mulranny to Achill Island.
