The EPA has published its Bathing Water Quality in Ireland report for 2024 and all five of Achill’s Blue Flag beaches have been rated as ‘excellent’. Dooega, Dugort (Silver Strand), Golden Strand, Keel and Keem beaches all attained the highest classification for their water quality.
Nationwide, the EPA report found that 81% of Ireland’s bathing sites have water quality rated ‘excellent’. The full report can be read or downloaded from the Environmental Protection Agency’s website: Bathing water quality in Ireland in 2024.
The 100% excellent rating for Achill’s beaches follows another recent honour, as Keem Bay was listed in the world’s top 50 best beaches. The list was compiled from a longlist sourced from thousands of industry experts, which was then voted on by a panel of judges comprising some 1,000 travel professionals. Among their criteria for the final list were: uniqueness, wildlife, soundtrack of nature, ease of access, and the calmness of the water. Keem was rated #48 in the world, and #7 in Europe.
Writing about Keem Bay, the study cited its ‘tropical vibes’, stating “Set in a dramatic environment, Keem Beach stands out for its raw natural beauty and surprisingly blue waters, which resemble those found in more tropical locations”. It continued, “Keem Beach is accessible via a scenic drive with panoramic coastal views, where you might even encounter the occasional sheep or two, adding to the charm of this unique beach experience”.
