Roll up! Roll up! The circus is coming to the sea! Details have been announced of this year’s Circus Science by the Sea festival in Achill and other parts of County Mayo. The activities take place from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th November and are part of the national Science Week event.
Hosted by Achill-based Circus250, all events are free of charge but do require registration at EventBrite. See below for details and (free) booking links.

FRIDAY 17th NOVEMBER
Pint of Science Pub Quiz, Valley House (F28 D8F7), 8 – 9pm. Reserve your spot.
Test your scientific knowledge in this informal, fun quiz in the traditional bar at the historic Valley House, Achill Island. Prizes to be won!

SATURDAY 18th NOVEMBER
Build a Circus Aerial Rig, Halla Acla, Achill Sound (F28 FX74), 1.30 – 3pm. Reserve your place.
An expert circus rigger guides you through the engineering of building an aerial rig, with hands-on experience.
Clown-led Beach Clean Up, Cloghan Pier, Currane. 2pm. Reserve your spot.
Climate Crisis Clown Juanita leads a beach clean-up. Followed by opening of exhibition ‘Ealaín ó bruscar: Art from rubbish’ at Currane Community Hall, a display of scupltures and art created by local community artists from objects found in the sea.

SUNDAY 19th NOVEMBER
The Dangers of the Deep – How to Swim Safely in the Sea, Valley House (F28 D8F7), 11am. Reserve your spot.
Swim Ireland’s RNLI officer Alan McCormack gives a talk on Open Water Swim Safety. Note, if you would like to go sea swimming, the local Vitamin Sea group has its regular session at Silver Strand Beach, Dugort, at 10am.

An afternoon of free circus activities with something for everyone! Activities include:
- Science on Stilts (from 12 noon onwards)
- The Amazing Flea Circus in a Suitcase (from 12 noon onwards)
- Meet a real life Mermaid (from 12 noon onwards)
- The Rock Showman (1pm – 4pm)
- Circus Workshops with Fishy n’ Dishy (2pm – 4pm)
- The Secrets of an Oyster’s Shell (2pm – 4pm)
