Events to Celebrate Achill’s Wildlife

A Celebration of the Wildlife of Achill

Announcing a series of nature walks and talks from wildlife experts in celebration of the wildlife of Achill, Co. Mayo, on Ireland’s Wild Atlantic Way. All of the events listed below are free and family friendly (all except the bat training are suitable for kids) and are open to the general public.

Friday May 25th: Achill Greenway Wildflower Walk – Meet at Tonragee football pitch for Greenway Walk with NPWS Education Guides. 4.30pm – 5.30 pm

Wednesday June 5th: Beat Plastic Pollution – Beach Clean – As part of World Environment Day, organised by the NPWS, Leave no Trace and the Waters & Communities Office. Takes place at Golden Strand, Achill, 12 noon – 4pm.

Thursday July 4th: Hidden Wildlife of the Deserted Village – At the Deserted Village, Slievemore, with Leonard Floyd Conservation Ranger from NPWS. 9.30am

Saturday July 6th: Clean Coast Two Minute Beach Cleans – As part of the 2019 Achill Half Marathon & 10K Run, participants and spectactors are invited to join in a series of two-minute cleans on Keel Beach. 12 noon – 2pm.

Saturday July 13th: Nature Walk & River Ecology – With Mick Kane – Waters & Communities Officer, at the Dooagh Day Festival.

Thursday July 18th: Bat Training – with Dr Tina Aughney, Bat Conservation Ireland.

Saturday July 20th: Irish Whale & Dolphin Group – Talk in the Achill Experience, Keel.

Sunday July 21st: Irish Whale & Dolphin Group – Land based whale and dolphin watch, Keem Bay.

Tuesday July 23rd: Basking Shark talk – Irish Basking Shark Project in Achill Sound Library.

Saturday August 3rd: Seaweed and Rock Pools Safari – with NPWS ranger Leonard Floyd. Meet at Dooega Beach, 2.30pm.

Tuesday August 6th: Coastal Biodiversity of Golden Strand – With Margaret Flaherty & Marina Mulligan, NPWS Education Guides. 2.00pm – 3.00pm. (Part of the Valley Festival).

Thursday August 8th: River Ecology Walk – Learn More About Your Local River – Mick Kane, Waters and Communities Officer, meet at 3pm Dookinella Bridge. (Part of the Tarry Festival).

Thursday August 8th: Guided Wildflowers Walk & Talk – with Margaret Flaherty, NPWS Educational Guide. Meet at Glor na dTonn, Currane, 11am.

Saturday August 10th: Seals of Ireland – Mel from Seal Rescue Ireland. Bunnacurry N.S., 11am.

Thursday August 15th: Birds of Prey in Mayo – with NPWS Conservation Ranger Irene O’Brien. 4pm at Johnny Pattens Pub, Kildamhnait Festival.

Monday August 19th: Nature Walk – With Environmental Educator Michael Bell, meet at Keel Lake at 1pm. Part of Heritage Week.

Tuesday August 20th: Irish Seabirds – with NPWS Ranger Eoin McGreal. Meet at Dooagh N.S., 3pm.
